Activities of the project "The Deceptive Face of Plastic" in France
On April 9-12, 2025, five high school students from Prienai Žiburys Gymnasium—Rokas Vaicekauskas (Form IIIc), Justė Radzevičiūtė (Form IIIb), Dija Degutytė (Form IIc), Tumas Žukauskas (Form IId), and Ema Kučinskaitė (Form Ic)—along with the project coordinators Rasa Kučinskienė and Giedra Aldakauskienė, paid a visit to France to implement the activities planned for the international ProBleu program project “The Deceptive Face of Plastic” (HORIZON-MISS-2022-OCEAN-01-08 No. 2_1714391310).
At the very start of the visit, the students met with a team of scientists from the University of Marseille conducting microplastic research. Richard Sempéré, the director of the Institute of Ocean Sciences, coordinated the meeting. Then, the students listened to an informative lecture by Thi Thao NGUYEN (Vietnam) on the topic, “What are microplastics?” How do we analyze them in environmental samples? They also presented the research conducted at their school as well as discussed selecting an appropriate methodology for their study.
Thereafter, the students had the opportunity to test the technical equipment that enables accurate identification and counting of microplastic particles, practically applying the methodology used by the scientists. The students gained new knowledge and experience and became convinced that the microplastic research method they were conducting was appropriate.
The next day, they carried out macroplastic research in Nice, using the “Plastic Pirates” methodology, and assessed the expected chemical and physical properties of the Mediterranean Sea water. In the near future, the students will continue further water research in their school laboratories.
As young scientists, we are pleased that we have been able to cooperate with scientists from the University of Marseille, enjoy the green nature of France, the landscapes of the old town and the coast of Nice, and a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with the French culture in general.
